Thomas D’Arcy McGee was born in Ireland in 1825 and died in Ottawa in 1868. He was a newspaper editor, historian, poet and politician. He came to Canada in 1857. From 1858 until his death in 1868 he represented the constituency of Montreal West, first in the legislature of the colony of Canada and then in the House of Commons of the Dominion.
While in the government of Canada, he was a strong supporter of the union of the British North American colonies into one nation with loyalties to Britain. He was a delegate at the nation – forming conferences at Charlottetown (1864) and Quebec (1866). His active role and oratorical skills contributed to the formation of dominion from sea to sea.
Thomas D’Arcy McGee, in a very real sense, one of the Fathers of Confederation, gave Canada a spiritual sense of oneness and showed a good example of Canadian patriotism.
Simon Fraser was born in 1776 and died in 1862. He was a son of a Loyalist family that moved to Canada in 1784.
Simon Fraser was a fur-trader and explorer with the North West Company (before the union of that company with the Hudson Bay Company in 1821). He explored the river that bears his name in an attempt to find a navigable route for the fur trade to the Pacific. He also explored regions in the northern interior of British Columbia and founded a number of trading posts there.
This courage and daring, as shown in his challenge of the hazardous Fraser River, has placed him among the great Canadians who contributed to the inclusion of the West in the nation of Canada.
